CAN A CRACK GET WORSE OVER TIME?
Yes, a crack can get bigger, partly due to freeze-thaw cycles. It’s best to address it promptly to prevent more serious issues.
IS THE REPAIR DONE FROM THE INSIDE OR THE OUTSIDE?
Yes. Most foundation and structural work require a permit, although some minor projects may be exempt. It’s always best to check with your municipality.
HOW CAN I TELL IF MY CRACK IS A SIMPLE CRACK OR LINKED TO FOUNDATION MOVEMENT?
The first thing to look for is how the crack has changed over time. If the crack has been there for a long time and isn’t changing, it’s generally not related to active foundation movement.
If the crack is widening, appeared suddenly, or is accompanied by other symptoms (cracks in the masonry, doors or windows that stick, uneven floors, gaps between walls and the ceiling, etc.), it is most likely caused by foundation movement.
DO I NEED AN EXCAVATION PERMIT?
In most municipalities across Quebec, a permit is not required for this type of repair. However, we recommend confirming with your local municipality before starting the work.
